In this edition of 5 Minutes With, we had the pleasure of interviewing the stunning Efia from Effy Talks Life. Her blog is predominantly travel & lifestyle based, however, she also touches on some awesome things such as confidence, mental health & staying healthy while travelling! Below she has shared some of her experiences and we know that you’ll find it useful for your journey too!

Tell us about yourself!

Hey, I’m Efia! Honestly, I always hit a bit of a block when people ask me where I’m from. What does that mean these days? I guess the short answer is I’m Scottish because I grew up there. But I was born in London and I’m currently living in Australia. On my blog I share travel tips, insights from my experiences and all things wellbeing and female empowerment. I believe in stepping into your power and going in search of what sets your soul on fire. For myself, and for everyone.

Having spent a lot of time struggling with anxiety and depression my blog kind of became this space where I was able to channel those experiences in to something positive. To help others and, in a way, to help myself.

What are your favourite ways to wind down when you’re stressed/need to relax?

I try to find the rational response to whatever I’m experiencing whether that’s sharing it with a friend or writing it down to work out what’s at the root of the problem. I also really love going to the cinema alone there’s something very calming about it. When I was 12 I had a late onset of chicken pox and didn’t want to be around anyone, but I didn’t want to be bored at home either and I remember going to see the Bratz movie alone haha. Now, 13 years later, whenever I’m feeling down I know it’s a good place where I can go to be distracted when I don’t feel like having company, but don’t want to be in complete isolation.

 

I saw your post about being more confident, how do you find this helps you?

Confidence is at the root of every choice we make, by working on it a lot of doors open, or indeed close, for you. There have been a lot of times in my life when I’ve been made to feel small or I’ve felt insecure – even today I still have my hang ups – I’m only human! But working on my confidence is a way to either push through those things or work around them. I wouldn’t be where I am today without that desire to continually work on myself.

Next week I’m turning 25. 😨 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The pinnacle age for having your shit together and some sort of clue where you’re going with your life. Or, as I like to call it, a year of unnecessary self-imposed stress eating. 🙃 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I spent a lot of time in my early twenties getting caught up in fears of the future (anxiety) and disappointments of the past (depression). Focussing so much on all the noise that I forgot to enjoy the part where I just lived. 🙌🏾 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These days I try to spend as much time as possible celebrating the present and living in the now. 😌 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hope you’ll join me in making this next year the best ever also any life tips for this next five years share them below 🤣⠀

Who is someone that inspires you?

I love watching Patrica Bright. Makes me so happy to see how far she’s come and to see a woman of colour getting these amazing opportunities.

 

Have you told people about your experience with mental health? Why/Why not?

I talk about my personal experiences a lot on my blog and social media. I think it’s important to share to shift the stigma, but I also don’t blame anyone for not wanting to talk about it. It breaks my heart that so many people feel alone when these conditions are something so many of us share – whether directly or through a friend or family member.

 

Do you exercise? Why/Why not?

I do! Up until a couple of years ago I didn’t do anything, which probably has a lot to do with feeling pretty depressed and unmotivated. These days I do yoga and go to the gym every week. It helps to level out my mood and of course there’s all those yummy endorphins too.

How do you face aversion and negative comments online & in ‘real’ life?

Unfortunately, you can’t be liked by everyone. All you can do is be someone that you personally are proud of. I just remind myself what and who really matters.

 

Favourite thing to have for dinner/to cook for your family?

Ooh tricky one, I’m such a feeder too! I live in Australia and my siblings in the UK so I don’t really see much of my family but I do love to cook for my friends. I always love having barbecues at my apartment. Bringing together different groups of friends for food, fun and views!
